If you are an upper-level undergraduate or graduate student looking to gain experience with solid-state NMR spectroscopy, the 2026 MagLab Summer School on Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy is the perfect place to learn about both NMR fundamentals and advanced NMR techniques, including an introduction to Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) NMR and using the world’s highest magnetic field NMR platform, the 36 T Series Connected Hybrid.  No previous knowledge of NMR beyond organic chemistry is assumed; basic knowledge of NMR is helpful but not necessary.

The weeklong summer school features tutorials on NMR basics and lectures from experts in the field of solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

The Summer School will take place May 11-15, 2026 at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) in Tallahassee, FL.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • The basic NMR experiment
  • Fourier transform NMR spectroscopy
  • NMR interactions
  • An introduction to solid-state NMR spectroscopy
  • NMR crystallography
  • Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) NMR
  • Solid-state NMR at ultra-high magnetic fields
  • Applications of solid-state NMR to materials science and biosolids
  • Probes and circuit design
  • Careers in science
  • Patent law and solid-state NMR
  • Workshops:
    • Sample preparation
    • Probe tuning and experimental setup
    • Spectral processing and analysis
    • Quantum chemical computation of NMR parameters
  • Tours:
    • MagLab facilities including magnet science and technology, probe design laboratory, and all NMR and MR imaging platforms.

Important Information

We are accepting a maximum of 12 students for summer school.

This summer school runs concurrent with the MagLab User Summer School, which focuses on magnets in condensed matter physics.

Dates

  • Online application opens: February 2026
  • Last date to apply for User Summer School: March 27, 2026 at 5 p.m. EST
  • Acceptance notification to applicants: April  2026

Cost

The cost of summer school is $500 and includes:

  • Housing from Sunday, May 11 to Saturday, May 16
  • Travel between the hotel and MagLab during the week
  • Most meals

Name badges will be provided when you arrive at the MagLab on Monday, May 11, 2026. You must display your name badge during the entire week to identify yourself as a Summer School participant.

The MagLab does not allow "open-toed shoes" in lab spaces. You MUST wear close-toed shoes (no flip-flops or sandals). In addition, if you have any implants (like knee replacements or metal pins) or medical devices that you rely upon (such as pacemakers or insulin pumps), let us know as soon as possible.
